Ideals
If you want to "Give a Hand, Change a life" and help underprivileged children by mentoring them, join SWB. Siblings Without Borders is a new organization, which will pair each member with a "little sister" or "little brother" during our frequent trips to low-income areas of Baja California. During these trips, volunteers will get to know the children, and will tutor/mentor them in various subjects.
Siblings without Borders hopes to address the academic shortcomings, lack of social interaction, and creation of life-long bonds for helpless low-income children in the Southern California area. Although schools provide shelter and other forms of basic necessities to children in need, they lack a means of providing each and every child the opportunity to establish an emotion connection with the outside world. This problem can be addressed by providing opportunities of social interaction, which we hope to obtain by introducing these children to a volunteer that we hope will become their big brother or big sister. We believe that this bond is a fundamental means of opening their eyes to opportunities they never knew were possible. After doing research, we found that children, upon leaving their schools lacked the motivation and social skills to do anything more than the minimum with their lives to get by. We would like to provide these children with ambition and confidence to set life-long goals and go beyond the conventional expectations that the society has set for them. They will overcome these obstacles with the help of knowledgeable mentors who will guide these children in the right direction. They will help these children develop social skills that are an integral part of being a successful member of society. We hope to organize a fraternal bond between individual volunteers and these low-income students. An important way to build these social ties is to coordinate events that will encourage children to build relationships with their mentors. These social events will include sports tournaments, games nights, and cross-cultural events.
